I find it hard to believe 3rd world countries anrt on this list |
Trevor 20th March 2012 |
THe Bahamas needs to be included as well. |
Elayna 18th February 2012 |
By teenage pregnancy it's still including 19 year old women right? Maybe there should be a high school specific teenage- pregnancy list. Most people i know have a child right after high school and that could add a lot to the numbers.
It feels to me like it just seems worse because people associate teenager with someone in high school... or middle school. |
Craig 10th February 2012 |
This information needs to be presented as % of population as well. |
Alisa 24th January 2012 |
I think this proves that the US's attitude towards teenage pregnancy and women's health needs to be updated. Maybe this is why we are in a deficit. |
Punya Hewavithanage 23rd November 2011 |
I need to get teenage pregnancy statistics in Sri Lanka and India. Hope this website has not included those two countries. Appreciate if those countries are also included. |
katerina 16th November 2011 |
i also really feel the UK should be in here, probably second place after the US |
Smart_girl 3rd November 2011 |
The U.S offers to much freedom and not enough mentors. having a baby is a blessing but, not as a teen. thats why there are either too many struggling mothers or abandoned children. |
Steven 21st October 2011 |
Where's the UK in this, i have a feeling it should be in here.. |
Tiffany 3rd October 2011 |
I disagree with this completely. There are so many other countries where you are a wife and a mother before you're 20 and that is common place. In the US it is taboo to be a pregnant teen. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just saying there is no way it's this extreme. |

Click on 'Per Capita", and it is. |
RM 20th October 2010 |
This needs to be updated, for one, as this is 12 years old now.
Also, it would be nice to have a graph of total pregnancies, not just total births. |
Erm... 14th October 2010 |
Why is this not normalized to population?... |

I do not understand what the big deal is over teen pregnancy. I think that parents and society are much too involved in making choices for the girls. I think that the girls should be able to learn as much as possible about the good and bad aspects of teenage pregnancies. The internet is not much help for finding the positive in it. I spent about an hour and a half looking at countless websites to find maybe two or three paragraphs on the positive aspects of getting pregnant at a young age. I do not agree with how society has turned teenage pregnancy into such a bad thing. The negative aspects of teen pregnancy are certainly numerous. But there are some good aspects of it. Age is only one consideration when a pregnancy happens, from a health perspective; there are many positive things about teen pregnancy that often go ignored. As long as a pregnant girl has regular prenatal care (existing or happening during pregnancy but before childbirth), her age is rarely an issue in terms of pregnancy. Statistics show that females older than 15 face the same risks during pregnancy as women in their 20s and 30s. Younger girls are less likely to have pre-existing medical conditions that increase the risk of pregnancy, so they experience fewer complications from the pregnancy and birth itself. Younger people tend to have higher energy levels than older people. This can positively affect the mood of a mother-to-be and create a more joyful experience. So who is society to say that a girl is too young to understand or too young to be able to decide to get pregnant. I think that if people were better informed their views on teen pregnancy might be different. Another positive aspect of teen pregnancy is that recovery process can be significantly better because of being young. An 18-year-old is more likely to recover quickly from giving birth than a 40-year-old.After birth many young mothers are unhappy with their post baby bodies and it can add unneeded stress. This has psychological, social and health implications So being young can get eliminate some of the physical problems a female in her late 20’s or 30’s would face. I was shocked but how hard it was to find good aspects about teenage pregnancies on the web. Society is only showing young girls what they want them to see. The fact that some articles like, “Teen ‘pregnancy pact’ has US town reeling in shame” say things like, “shame”, “ill afford”, “wanted to stir up trouble”, “social evil” embarrassed school and health officials”, does not portray a good light on teenage pregnancy. Because of articles like that and many others teenage pregnancy is looked at as a shameful social evil, instead of the wonderful gift of birth. Overall I think that age does not matter with proper support and to be well informed getting pregnant at young can be a happy and wonderful experience. |

Where's the U.K..? That's what I want to know!!
It's very surprising that they aren't up there with the best.. although I must say that the goverment are very supportive of younger people regarding family planning, e.g. free condoms available at clinics, free birth control pills, free iud fitting and removal; good for them. That means that this matter is very much based on goverment education and support. I have never had an unwanted pregnancy because I know everything there is to know on the matter.
Good on 'ya England.. |

The listing isn't about the continent of Africa and not about Mexico,it's about DEVELOPED countries where ALL young girls can get as much contraception as they can get SEX.Actually the update for the US is 750,000.
It's 41,325 in the UK for 2008 statistic.
To Jessica from Houston:France was #5 and Spain was #8.
These numbers don't include pregnancies of teens under 15,
top two ; UK and USA
The US tops also the record of abortions with more than
1,3 million per year.Abortion is birth control in the US. |

i believe that what we have here is a cultural problem. we have little sense of what is right or wrong and nor do we care. americans just want to have fun and get the most of what they can. how about everyone read up on nietzche....he told it the best in his story called "the madman" |
SHANA 20th April 2010 |
WOW I DIDNT THINK AUS WOULD BE UP TOP! |

To Shaniqua: Since when is it the responsibility of the country within which you reside to take ownership of your birth control. If you don't want to have children, then you have two options: abstain from sex, use birth control. You make a mockery of all that we women have fought for. |
Shaniqua Leshawnda 7th April 2010 |
Ive been pregnant about 9 times now and im only 17. Its becoming a problem and theres not enough room in my apartment for 9 of these rug rats. If the united states would teach me some of that birth control thing i could not have these babies and just have sex liek the way i want to. |
nate 25th March 2010 |
I think that the united states needs to learn what condoms are |
alexmagana 15th March 2010 |
alot of people have made the mistame on getti g pregnant, but there are still many more that tend to hide their pregnancy and when the child comes they get rid of it. so they be missing a great deal of numbers here. |
sally 6th November 2009 |
does it makes sense when girls get pregnant? for my belief i think it doesn't make any sense at all. cause when young people have children at an early age you can't consentrate on your school work ,in addition for example young people like going to dances you can't leave your child home alone but if you don't have a child there is no problem at all . my advice to young people is to hold your head up high and see what you can get out of life thats good enough for you . |
Tiffany (Ohio, USA) 6th March 2009 |
this schould be updated!!! I have a strong feeling the US data has changed... seeing as in my school there have been forty pregnancies, this year!!!! |

home training is not the issue. the issue is lack of reliable education, limited access to contraception, intolerance regarding sexuality. teens in other countries initiate sex the same age as US teens. the difference is that in other countries, they accept sexuality as part of the culture, not as deviant and sinful.
blame the religious right. |
Charlene Nesmith (Rochester,NY) 25th April 2007 |
To be living in the United States and to see we have the most Teenage Pregnancies is a damn shame and disgrace to our country and I'm a shame to say I'm from the United States. They need more home training! |
david (Belchertown) 22nd May 2006 |
you are right teenage pregnancy is much more frequent in developing countries, this stat does not count them.
an unwanted bay is a real tragedy
a big part of this is cultural, american media glorifies sex
making contraception methods more easily available will definatly reduce this |
Nimja 18th October 2005 |
You know that is interesting, you would think there would be a lot more cases in third world countries, at least from what I've seen. |
mike 20th June 2005 |
what about african nations? don't women who live in africa or who belong to certain tribes get pregnant at an early age cause they are forced to live with their husbands even at the age of 9 years old? |
