True data should be per marriage, per time lasted. Ie, the link from alex is meaningless as it refers to the whole population. It should be measured from those married, & also, number of months lasted. Divorce after 25 yrs is not as awful as divorce after 1 year, signifying a breakdown of a national institution. |

@Alex, re: USA and other missing countries
Just because a statistic is of interest does not mean that it is available. In the case of the United States, the federal government has not reported detailed divorce statistics since 1996.
@Arthur, re: divorces per marriage
There are still problems with that statistic, especially if it's measured the simplest ways -- divorce per marriages this year, or divorce rate / marriage rate -- is that it measures different populations, Kim Khardasian excepted. But it's often all that's available.
If I could measure any statistic now, it might be: among 1000 men, 50+ and ever-married, how many divorces per how many marriages? But then that stat would have been most useful 30 years ago. |

I totally believe that the God that instituted marriage is the One with solution to modern day marriages. So let of go back to Genesis and fix our marriages not the courts |

Where's the USA? It is #1 in divorce per capita I'm thinking, with 4.95 per 1,000 people (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/peo_div_rat-people-divorce-rate), but I don't see it on this list. I'd think it'd be at least #5. |

I think people go into marriages with the idea that, "if it doesn't work, we can get a divorce." It's an easy out and too many people are too scared to be alone that they settle with whomever they have to avoid their fear. I don't remember who said it, but it's an interesting quote, "keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut after." In other words, don't be afraid to look at the real person when you are looking, don't close your eyes to the things that are serious problems, then once you've married the person of your choice, don't be so nit-picky about things that don't matter. It teares a person apart and only keeps you dissatisfied with the person you've married. Weigh what's important by it's effect; does it harm you, your family or that person? If so, it's important. If not, you need to let it go and learn to compromise. Honor that person above yourself, and if you can't then you are not ready for marriage, or any relationship for that matter! |

There should be a requirement of individuals to have a maximum number of session of talks with others (counselors) that have been married and divorced before getting married; to have first hand comments of what it is like to be married, what to expect; children; what its like to go through a divorce. These sessions should be first hand experience only. |

This is assumedly, the number of divorces for the year 2000 over the number of total married people. |
