@Abbey. There are many countries with higher teenage pregnancy rates. They're just not on the list.

Shells, are you thick or something? Its not figures of how many pregnancies there actually were in the UK and USA, its the rates.
Meaning the calculations added up to a percentage out of a certain number.

I live in NZ and hate that the rate is this high I've heard about all female schools were girls have had abortion's without the parent's knowing.
I feel slighting ashamed living in the third highest teen pregnancy country I myself am only a teenager.

I don't see Russia on this list. As a matter of fact there are alot of countries missing from this list. How impartial is this list?

Education of such a huge impact on the life of all involved is most important in life decisions.
Make parents of the children share some of the responsibility.

To unclear: Actually, if one were to explore this site a little, they would see that the US is still number 2 when it comes to abortion rates (with Russia being number 1). So no, neither Japan nor Korea's low birth rates are due to abortion. The amount of teenage pregnancy is just simply ridiculous in the US, no matter which way you look at it.

That said, Japan IS number 10 in abortion rates, though Korea isn't anywhere to be seen on that particular list.

I'm pretty sure these are birth rates which changes things in prespective as in Ireland abortion is illeagal making birth rates higher and I've heard a statistic before saying Swedish girls lost their virginity younger than any other european country but the teenage birth rate would be lower due to abortions, quite sad really.

Teen is from 13 to 19. For 15 to 19, the data shows
43 births in US. Therefore, the 22.2 for the 15 to 17 is
not contradictory to the 52.1 from 13 to 19.

i agree with bubbles, we can't fix this problem, becoz we let it progress throught the many years and did nothing about it. Sex education and passing out condoms is NOT enough to stop teen pregnancy! Hell, even HIV & AIDS is NOT enought to scare teens! I would be scared to death, to just have some random guy, not knowing if he had a deadly diease, or not. Talking to your children doesn't help (ALL THE TIME) They just take what you said with a grain of *sugar NOT salt* LOL Anyway.....someone suggested the federal gov. should make birth control "Mandatory" to help control teen pregnancy. That is just giving your young female children, the right to have sex. The next updated poll in a few years would be: The Most sexually transmitted Dieases USA.....off the charts!!!

It looks to me like UNICEF might have made a mistake here. US govt stats show 51 per 1000 (most recent = 53) as percent births to UNMARRIED WOMEN AGES 15–44. The most recent figure for births to females ages 15–17 is 22.2 per 1,000 (2007). This doesn't reflect all teenage births; however it looks like something is wrong here. Using the US statistic puts us at number 7 rather than number 1, still pretty distressing.

the rates are awful, they should be decreased dramatically.

It should be clarified, is it birth rate or is it pregnancy rate? Can it be that the low birth rate in Japan and Korea is due to a high abortion rate? (with birth rate + abortion rate = pregnancies)

why is there an everlasting increase in teenage pregnancies around the world nowadays? can we put a stop to this? i seriously think that these young girls need Jesus and that they should go to church and invite god in to their lives. also they should be educated in this field of sex education. if they take heed of the consequences they may be able to understand the correct age to have sex.

i think you should be more specific about what you are talking about and i am with you bubbles on the kids talking on the phone too much. but i am not with you when you said that we give kids too much freedom because you have to remember that we were once kids and we wanted our freedom just like our kids and some of us was even just like our kids today some wild some not.

I do think this is an issue that we cannot fix as some of you may know there are some religions that you have to get married at a early age. Even in the United States of America. Actually USA has the highest rate because we give kids to much freedom they go to the malls with no parent. Talk to boys on the phone, Its crazy!!!!
