Hey people from Russia. Don't believe the hype - I am Canadian and I lived in the US for 2 years, it's awful. They have no opinions, no health care, they treat minorities horribly and bully every other country. Move to Canada - TRUE freedom of thoughts, race, religion etc

Visit the U.S. if you wish. But the propaganda that has risen from the West and the image of a glorious Americas will be shattered once you step foot on it's soil. It's a wasteland covered up the media. It's on the brink of destruction.

Sorry Wendy, but here's the real answer to Joe's question. In North America the lowest point is in Death Valley, California at 282ft/86m below sea level. The highest point is Mount McKinley, Alaska at 20,320ft/6194m. If you are talking about the U.S. instead of the entire North American continent then the lowest point remains in Death Valley Ca., the highest point is then Mount Whitney,Ca at 14,494 ft. Incidentally, they have a race from Death Valley(lowest point) to the top of Mt. Whitney(highest point) that I've always wanted to try. Fun, fun fun! :)

The answers to many of the questions asked above can be found in what many of you may regard as a rather bizzare source - The CIA factbook. While the Central Intelligence Agency has a dubious operational record the same can not be said of its' factbook which is the only halfway reliable source of demographic and economic data for a large number of undeveloped, corrupt or undeveloped and corrupt countries. It also contains the same data for developed countries. It can be found on line at. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/

That's all well and good for Canada, but if any developed country had as small a population as Canada does, they would be that good too. You have to take Canada's miniscule population into account.

I had a school teacher tell me the other day that there were more African Americans in California, the old west 1800's than there were caucasian and/or native American. I do not think this is accurate, and this is what are children are being taught about our History. Does anyone know a good place for accurate demographics of California during the 1800's?

The fact that there were more white people on death row in the United States in 2001 than all other racial groups combined seems to indicate that the death penalty is applied without regard to racial origins. However, one must take into account that, according to the 2000 U.S. Census http://www.census.gov/prod/2001pubs/c2kbr01-1.pdf , 75.1 percent of Americans (211,460,626 people) identify themselves as white. People who identify themselves as African Americans account for only 12.3 percent of the population (34,658,190 people). If the numbers for 2001 given above are correct, the number of white death row inmates is only about 25 percent higher than the number of African Americans sentenced to death, despite the white population being about six times larger than the African American population. So, statistically, an African American is more likely to be sent to death row than a white American.

Our friend who says the USA has "the highest crime of any country" is not telling the whole story.

It's true that drug abuse remains a scourge in American society. A variety of crimes within its borders follow from this. The story becomes much more interesting, though, once one bears in mind that the level of documented crime in a society depends in large part on the willingness of that society to prosecute its criminals. The US experiences violence within its borders but hardly takes a lax attitude.

This is not the case everywhere. One can easily look around the world and find regimes that daily turn blind eyes to rampant violence. Stores can be ransacked, ethnic minorities can be persecuted, political enemies can be imprisoned, and women and children can be abused in their own homes without any government intervention. Such regimes can, because of the lower number of crimes they prosecute, claim a lower level of documented crime. The daily reality faced by their citizens is a different matter.

This is why any serious discussion of the true level of crime in a society takes into account the matter of official corruption. It's interesting that our friend left this aspect of crime out of the equation. If he taken the trouble to investigate the figures published here, he would have learned that the United States can claim a political process that is one of the most transparent in the world.

Now that's interesting.
