.co.uk is part of the .uk Domain Name System. It is by far the largest second level domain under .uk. It was one of the first to be issued by the UK Naming Committee and has a 'weak' and 'open' charter, that is, it is intended for use by commercial or business bodies but no effort is made to enforce that, similar to .com registrations, which it mirrors in many ways.
