The club was founded in 1896 and was one of the most successful teams in early German football. The club won the first German Championships in 1903. The club was dissolved after World War II, but was later reformed. The club got a favourable treatment during the DDR-Oberliga-era, as one of the country's football centres was placed in Leipzig. The most successful decade so far was the 1980s, when the club won the East German cup three times, as well as reached the Cup Winners' Cup-final in 1987 The club had a few good years after the German reunification, before it was stroked with major problems, on the pitch, as well as economically. The club has been refounded after a bankruptcy and does at the moment play in the lower series. The club is however much stronger than its position might indicate, and wins the games easily.
