116 Sirona is a somewhat large and bright-colored main belt asteroid. It is probably composed of silicate rocks and metallic nickel-iron.


It was discovered by C. H. F. Peters on September 8, 1871 and named after Sirona, the Celtic goddess of astronomy.

On 2007 May 24 UT, the 72 km diameter asteroid (116) Sirona will occult a 12.1 mag star in the constellation Leo for observers along a path beginning close to Kalbarri in Western Australia, passing near Coolgardie, Norseman and Israelite Bay.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 1.1 mag to 12.7 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 3.3 seconds.

In Celtic mythology, Sirona was a goddess worshipped predominantly in East Central Gaul and along the Danubian limes.
The statue of Sirona shows her carrying a bowl of eggs (Green 1986 p.162) and holding a long snake coiled around her lower arm (a link to the iconography of the Greek healing goddess Hygeia, daughter of Asklepios).
At Vienne-en-Val in the Loiret, a square stone pillar depicts Sirona, Apollo, Minerva and Hercules (Debal 1973).
