Overview

The album is softer than the group's previous efforts, with the exception of the first single and first track, "Price to Play". "Price to Play" is trademark of Staind's sound, with heavy guitars in the verses, soaring vocal harmonies, and melody/harmony guitars to complement the vocals. The album is a different direction for Staind, being more of a mainstream rock album than a nu-metal album; the screaming and anger of previous albums is almost non-existent. This album has a more positive attitude than the band's previous efforts. The song "Layne" is a tribute to Layne Staley, late Alice in Chains singer. Along with the song "Zoe Jane" honoring his first born daughter. Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - ca. ... Staind's fourth studio album, 14 Shades of Grey, will feature a wide array of styles, or shades of gray, as the band didn't limit itself to one extreme or another, but rather to everything in between.
14 Shades Of Grey, features fourteen shards of sonic fury and introspective intensity, tempered by song writing well beyond of anything the band has achieved before.
The recording of 14 Shades of Grey was produced by Josh Abraham and mixed by Andy Wallace, both of whom did the same honours for BREAK THE CYCLE.
14 Shades Of Grey | The A.V. Club (205 words)
At a time when the prevailing hard-rock sounds were mostly built around Durst's hedonistic swagger or the gut-wrenching histrionics of Korn and its ilk, Staind's success proved that the moody, minor-key self-flagellation of early-'90s grunge needn't be relegated to the nostalgia circuit just yet.
The group's commercially rewarding retreat from faceless, dour metal to faceless, dour modern rock continues in earnest (in more ways than one) on 14 Shades Of Grey, a title that ought to win some sort of truth-in-advertising award.
Cliché-intensive but good-hearted, both tracks aspire to more than just riffing and moaning, but the rest of 14 Shades Of Grey blurs together in a nondescript sea of appropriately colorless bluster.
