In the 9th centurybc, Syria and Mesopotamia emerged as glassmaking centers, and the industry spread throughout the Mediterranean region.
It was on the Phoenician coast, however, that the important discovery of glassblowing occurred in the 1st centurybc.
Glass was made in India as early as the 5th centurybc, but the industry was not established until the Mughal period, and particularly in the 17th century.
