After the war, the nation adopted three constitutional amendments—the 13th (1865), ending slavery; the 14th (1868), making fls citizens of the United States and prohibiting state laws that denied citizens equal protection under the laws; and the 15th (1870), prohibiting racial discrimination in voting.
