It hurts to see a great musical talent being misled into choosing the wrong pieces to play, to show himself up publicly as inadequate, not realising that it could have been recognised by the listeners were he to play music that was within his grasp, suited his temperament and stage in life.
It is appropriate gesture for the music of all periods.
On musical grounds, it makes very good sense for imitative entries to have the ends of phrases fading into melismas to avoid cluttering the texture and for the fill-in parts to be texted so that the chatter of up to 39 simultaneous consonants on a subordinate phrase is avoided.
