The East Yorkshire Regiment was an infantry regiment of the line in the British Army, first raised in 1685. It saw service for three centuries, before being amalgamated into The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire in 1958. Subsequently, The Regiment was one of the Yorkshire Infantry Regiments which amalgamated to form The Yorkshire Regiment (14th/15th, 19th and 33rd/76th Foot) on 6th June 2006. By the time I arrived in Aden in 1965, I had the feeling I was on familiar territory.
My father had done this tour in 1958, almost immediately after the amalgamation of the West Yorkshire Regiment (14th Foot, Prince Of Wales's Own) and the East Yorkshire Regiment (15th Foot, Duke Of York's Own).
Of course, dad went to the Radfan and as far as he was concerned, Aden was a rest camp.
British Light Infantry Regiments (6960 words)
The regiment was in Boston at the commencement of the dispute between the American Colonies and the mother country, and fought at Bunker's Hill, and in all the principal actions during the first three years of the War of Independence.
The regiment was among the troops sent to the relief of Quebec at the outbreak of the American War, and served in the operations under Burgoyne down to the surrender of Saratoga.
In 1755, the regiment went with reinforcements to North America, and was with Braddock in the disastrous attempt on Fort du Quesne, on the Ohio, and afterwards in the attacks on Ticonderoga and Fort Niagara, and in the expedition against Montreal.
