Syllabus (2980 words)
This course is the second course in a sequence (Eng 253, 254, 255) that surveys the breadth of American literature from pre-Columbian Native American oral traditions through contemporary literary expressions.
As such this course examines literature from approximately 1850 to 1910 with some overlap of material presented in the first course in the sequence.
There are no prerequisites for this sequence although having some post-secondary experience with literature (Introductions to fiction and poetry, for example) as well as one or two college composition courses (WR 121, 122, 123) will help considerably in giving these works an intelligent and engaged reading and in responding to them effectively.
