Encyclopedia > 16550 UART

The 16550 UART (universal asynchronous receiver transmitter) is made by National Semiconductor. Both the hardware and software interface of the 16550 are backward compatible with the earlier 8250 series and 16450 UART. The 16550 offers a 16-byte FIFO buffer. Now revised to the 16550D. It is an integrated circuit designed for implementing the electrical interface for serial communications; it is frequently used to implement the serial port for IBM PC compatible personal computers, where it is often connected to an RS-232 interface for modems, serial mice, printers, and similar peripherals. A UART or Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter is a piece of computer hardware that translates between parallel bits of data and serial bits. ... Similarly-numbered devices, with varying levels of compatibility with the original National Semiconductor part, are made by other manufacturers.

WH Networks - Windows 16550 UART Questions (765 words)
This UART and the improved 16450 version are limited to one input register that holds only one byte at a time.
These UARTs are not usually suitable for modem speeds greater than 9600 bits per second (BPS) because of possible input data overruns that can occur if a character is left in the input register when the next byte is received.
Instead, the UART remains in the 8250 UART compatibility mode, allowing one byte to be received at a time.
Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1447 words)
UARTs are commonly used in conjunction with other communication standards such as EIA RS-232.
A UART is usually an individual (or part of an) integrated circuit used for serial communications over a computer or peripheral device serial port.
The UART is a subset of "asynchronous receiver/transmitters" in that UARTs adds the ability to receive and transmit serial data using different serial bit rates.
