The company was founded near Wilmington, Del., in 1802 by a French immigrant, Eleuthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours, son of the eminent economist Pierre-Samuel du Pont de Nemours (17391817).
He was a popular naval hero, famous for his decisive courage displayed against France and Spain at Portobelo (1739), Cape Finisterre (1747), and Lagos Bay (1759).
