| We had already found that some science faculty members who were initially skeptical that first year students could be involved in any meaningful way in research projects had, through talking with their own colleagues and observing their behavior, found ways to involve first year students in research. |
| Students affiliated with the Project are more likely to declare a major in the sciences and the total number and percentage of women declaring majors in science and engineering increased from a low of 12% in 1990 to a projected 24% for the class graduating in June 1997. |
| In addition to the possible effects of dissemination about the Women in Science Project at conferences, through published articles and reports, and through invited presentations at other institutions, we know of at least two institutions where it is clear that the Project has had a significant effect on the development of similar programs. |
