This work is followed later in 1844 with a sequel, Miles Wallingford, in which Miles again goes to sea in search of a fortune in trade but instead is imprisoned and pressed into service.
The magazine featured reprints of the best articles from foreign periodicals, but after 1938 and until its demise in 1941, it was surreptitiously financed by the Japanese government for purposes of propaganda.
1844 was a leap year starting on Monday (see link for calendar).
