Archaeological evidence of the "stone wall" of behind which Longstreet's infantry massed on December 13, 1862, which had been removed shortly after the Civil War, was located, as were remains of the mid 19th century earthen road surface upon which the troops stood in preparation to receive the advancing Union infantry.
Prior to the events of December 1862 through May of 1863, Willis Hill served as the prestigious plantation or rural home of the Willis and then Wellford families, Col. Henry Willis being a key player in the early history of Fredericksburg.
