Discoverer J. Coggia, 1878

187 Lamberta is a large and very dark Main belt asteroid. It has a composition of primitive carbonaceous materials.


It was discovered by J. Coggia on April 11, 1878. It was second of his total of five asteroid discoveries. It is named after the astronomer Johann Heinrich Lambert.

OCCULTATION BY (187) LAMBERTA - 2005 MAR 25
On 2005 Mar 25 UT (before dawn on the 26th), the 130 km diameter asteroid (187) Lamberta will occult a 11.7 mag star in the constellation Sagittarius for observers along a path across SW Australia.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 1.6 mag to 13.1 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 4.5 seconds.

Unfortunately, that's not a good spread for an asteroid as large as Lamberta (especially this path, projected over a width of almost 200 km), but a point from Craig Smith would help that.
