It was discovered by C. H. F. Peters on June 18, 1878 and named after Menippe, one of the daughters of Orion in Greek mythology.

OCCULTATION BY (188) MENIPPE - 2003 OCT 22
On 2003 Oct 22 UT, the 38 km diameter asteroid (188) Menippe will occult a 11.4 mag star in the constellation Aries for observers along a path across Australia travelling SW from the Mid Queensland coast to just west of Ceduna on the SA Coast.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 1.7 mag to 12.8 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 3.2 seconds.
