The 1898 season was a fairly active one, with 9 storms forming, 4 of which became hurricanes. The first storm of the season formed on August 2 and hit Florida with 80 mph (128 km/h) winds. It went into Alabama and dissipated on August 3. The next storm formed to the east of the upper part of Florida on August 30. It hit near the border of South Carolina and Georgia with 100 mph (161 km/h) winds. It went into Georgia and dissipated on September 1. Another storm had a long life, spawning off of Africa as a Cape Verde-type hurricane on September 5. It hit the Lesser Antillies with 100 mph (161 km/h) winds then headed far north, striking Newfoundland with 65 mph (105 km/h) winds. It dissipated on September 20. The fourth storm formed near the Panama Canal on September 12, and hit the Yucatan Pennisula with 60 mph (97 km/h) winds. It traveled north and hit Louisiana with 60 mph (97 km/h) winds also. It headed up through Arkansas and Missouri, and finally dissipated in Illinois on September 22. The fifth storm formed on September 20 right to the east of the Lesser Antillies. It traveled northwest and hit the Lessers, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas at 60, 50, and 45 mph (97, 80, 72 km/h) It dissipated in the open sea shortly thereafter on September 28. The sixth storm formed right near the Panama Canal again on September 20, hit near Cancun nd Tullum, Mexico at 60 mph (97 km/h), and traveled north to hit Texas with 40 mph (64 km/h) winds. It dissipated very soon after making landfall on September 28. The seventh storm formed to the east of the Lessers on September 25 and traveled northwest, reaching 110 mph (177 km/h) winds but hitting no land. Later, it hit Georgia with 75 mph (120 km/h) winds. It dissipated after winding its way through Alabama, Tennese, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Southern Canada, part of Maine and Newfoundland on October 6. The eighth storm formed near the Lessers again on October 2, went northwest, curved around Cuba and hit Florida, going over Orlando with 60 mph (97 km/h) winds. It then left Florida and dissipated on October 14. The final storm of the season formed above the Lessers on October 27 and took a nearly straight-lined path to the west, hitting the Yucatan Pennisula with 60 mph (97 km/h) winds, and dissintigrated soon after on November 4.
