Bell Canada served primarily the populated areas of Quebec and Ontario, but it also operated exchanges in the Atlantic provinces, and at one time operated exchanges in provinces west of Ontario (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta).
In 1899, Bell Canada purchased the Barrie and Johnson Wire and Cable Company of Montreal, which in 1911 was renamed Imperial Wire and Cable.
Canada's Department of Transport took over the NCS from the RCAF in August 1946, then contracted CN Telegraphs to maintain and operate the NCS, effective April 1947.
