Thomas Edison formed the Motion Picture Patents Company, with goals of controlling production and distribution, raising theater admission prices, cooperating with censorship bodies, and preventing film stock from getting into the hands of nonmember producers.
It was at that point the term orphan film became officially part of the archival language and the scholarly language in general.
In 1931 reissue of a film which was originally tinted and toned, but the new negative made from print #3 was a fl-and-white print with a sound track, and five prints were made from this negative.
Prints of films that are known to exist in other forms and are neglected because their format does not correspond to what is perceived to be the best format.
