New Teams
In previous seasons, one club had the bye each round. The clubs found this unsatisfactory. There was much talk in 1924 that the VFL would be admitting new clubs in 1925, and there were proposals received from Brighton, Brunswick, Camberwell, Caulfield, Footscray, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, and Prahran. Footscray had won the 1924 VFA premiership, and it was assumed that they would be the first club to be invited. A meeting on the 9th of January decided which clubs would be introduced. The shortlist included Footscray, Hawthorn and Prahran, and North Melbourne (North Melbourne had narrowly missed out on being introduced into the competition in 1907, when Richmond was chosen instead). The final decision was made and three weeks later, formal invitations were sent to and accepted by North Melbourne, Hawthorn and Footscray. This left the competition with 12 competing clubs, asn a 17 round season was decided upon. This was changed to 18 in 1926, so every club would play 9 home and 9 away per season.
