Austria qualified but withdrew, so Sweden received automatic entry into the quarter-finals. The FIFA World Cup, sometimes called the football World Cup or the soccer World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men's national football teams of member nations of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body.
The decision to hold the second of these, the 1938 FIFA World Cup, in France was controversial, as the American countries had been led to understand that the World Cup would rotate between the two continents.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by Japan and Korea, was the first one held in Asia (and the only tournament with multiple hosts), and in 2010, South Africa will become the first African nation to host the World Cup.
