The NHL Amateur Draft was instituted in 1963 in order to break the existing NHL teams' monopoly on junior players, gained by the NHL Sponsorship System.
If an NHL team sponsored a junior team and a player was on that team, their rights belonged to the NHL team and the player could not play for any NHL team except the sponsor.
However, the first few years of the NHL draft were still affected by the sponsorship system since sponsored players were not eligible to be drafted.
Feb Fest - Kingston, Ontario (Canada) (3024 words)
Drafted in 1982 by the Winnipeg Jets, the one-time Bowling Green University star became an integral part of the Jets’ blueline corps during the Dale Hawerchuk era.
Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1978, he spent four years back and forth between the club and their AHL affiliate in New Brunswick.
A left shot defenseman of the Hamilton Red Wings OHA team, Rick Smith was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round (7th overall) in the 1966 NHL Amateur Draft.
