It began as a subtropical depression on July 28, and strengthened to Subtropical Storm Two on the 30th. That afternoon it rapidly acquired tropical characteristics, and was named Andrew. Andrew reached his peak of 45 M.P.H. that day, but became extratropical on August 1. Steering currents were weak, so the system made a slow counterclockwise loop around the Azores before dissipating on the 6th. After drifting for a day, the system became Tropical Storm Belle. Intensification became more steady, and she reached hurricane strength that night. Belle peaked on the 9th as a 120 M.P.H. major hurricane, located about 250 miles east of the Savannah, Georgia. Steady weakening occurred afterwards, but it managed to hit Long Island as a minimal hurricane on the morning of the 10th. Belle dissipated later that day over western Massachusettes. Like most hurricanes paralleling the east coast, hurricane watches and warnings were issued for much of the area, though damage was only estimated at $100 million. On August 18, it became a tropical depression, and later that day, it was named Tropical Storm Candice. Moving to the northeast, it remained weak until the 21st, when it rapidly became a hurricane, located at 41º north, or 400 miles east of Cape Cod. After drifting to the east-southeast, the storm rapidly moved to the northeast, reaching tropical storm strength on the way. After passing over Florida, Dottie moved to the north, reaching a peak of 50 M.P.H. winds. Conditions appeared favorable, and a hurricane watch was issued. However, upper level winds ripped the storm apart on the 20th, and it was barely a tropical storm at its South Carolina landfall on the 21st. Emmy moved recurved back northwest on the 26th, but again moved eastward on the 29th, when it reached its peak of 100 M.P.H. As it moved north-northeastward, it developed a circulation and became a subtropical depression on the 13th. The next day it became a subtropical storm, and reached its peak of 45 M.P.H. over the western Tropical Atlantic, off the coast of Georgia.
