The final race of the 1979 season began under wet conditions. It rained all morning of the race and while it had stopped the wet track meant the field would be starting on grooved tyres. Villeneuve made an excellent start from the second row to take an early lead. He would lead until his pit stop to change tyres. His rival for second place in the championship, Alan Jones, took over the lead. However, there would be no duel for the championship place as just after Jones took on slicks, a wheel came off being not properly secured in the pits. Villeneuve would lead the rest of the way with a commanding win to give Ferrari a one-two finish in the driver's championship.
