Jean-Pierre Jabouille - Grand Prix Racing - the whole story (319 words)
Jabouille was amongst the first wave of drivers to rise to prominence during France's motor racing renaissance in the late 1960s, working his way through F2 at the wheel of a Matra before joining that team's endurance racing line-up in the European F2 Championship in 1976 at the wheel of an Elf 2.
Later he had to suffer the brunt of the laughter as the first Renault turbos smoked an unreliable path round the Grand Prix trail in 1977, but by the summer of 1978 France's national racing car had become far less of a joke.
Jabouille won the 1980 Austrian Grand Prix on the super-fast Oesterreichring and then badly broke a leg in an accident during the Canadian Grand Prix.
