Encyclopedia > 1985A

1985A is the designation for the alternate reality of 1985 depicted in the ficticious 1989 movie Back to the Future Part II. The term was coined by Doc Brown, the inventor of a time machine, when he draws a timeline on a blackboard and explains to Marty McFly how changing a historical event that had influence on other events at the local and national level could cause the timeline to branch or "skew" into a new version of history. This article is about the year. ... 1989 (MCMLXXXIX) was a common year starting on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar. ... This reality started when a 78-year-old Biff Tannen stole the DeLorean time machine in 2015 taking it back to 1955 to give an almanac of sports statistics to his younger self. In that reality, young Biff used the Almanac to make a fortune, becoming rich and powerful. He made his first million betting on a horse race in 1958. Biff continued to gain power and influence for many years creating his own corporation, Biffco, and gaining a stranglehold on Hill Valley. In 1979 he successfully lobbied to legalize gambling and turned the courthouse clocktower at the center of town into a high-rise casino hotel. By 1985, the city of Hill Valley is dilapidated and crime-ridden due to a corrupt government and legal system. Hill Valley also suffered from extremely low socioeconomic status, and its residents lived in fear of the frequent shootouts conducted by unruly denizens of Hill Valley. Biff Tannen is a fictional character, the main villain in the Back to the Future motion picture trilogy, played in the three films and voiced in the animated series by Thomas F. Wilson. ... In 1973, Biff murdered George McFly, enabling him to force his "childhood sweetheart," George's wife Lorraine McFly, to marry him. By 1985, Dave McFly was a drunken bum who was on probation with the law, Linda McFly has racked up a great deal of credit card debt, and Marty McFly was attending boarding schools in Switzerland. Lorraine was an alcoholic who was often abused by Biff and was extremely lonely. Doc Brown had been committed to a mental institution back in 1983. Hill Valley High School burned down in 1979. The changes to the timeline affected the whole world. Richard Nixon did not resign due to the Watergate Scandal and had the constitution amended so that he could continue to serve as President of the United States, which he did until at least 1983. Furthermore, the Vietnam War was still going on in 1983 and is likely continuing past that point. It is presumed that in 1996 of this timeline, Biff was killed by Lorraine. Possibly because of the way he controlled her and her family and also possibly because she found out that he killed George. When Old Biff returned to 2015 from 1955, he was seen clutching his chest and (as it can be seen in the deleted scenes of the collector edition) he vanished into thin air, meaning that 2015 was changing into 2015A and that Biff was dead by 2015A. Theoretically, this would create a paradox because if Old Biff vanished into thin air because of being dead by 2015A, then he never would have been able to have taken the time machine to 1955 to give the Almanac to his younger self. 1973 (MCMLXXIII) was a common year starting on Monday (the link is to a full 1973 calendar). ... Doc, Marty, Jennifer, and Einstein entered 1985A on October 26 at 9:00 pm. Fortunately, in less than 6 hours there, Doc and Marty had figured out how the damage to the timeline occurred and went back to 1955 to fix it. This reality was erased when Marty burned the Almanac in 1955.
