The 1989 CONCACAF Championship was last edition held under the format of serving as qualification to the World Cup (Italy 1990) and having no host nation for the final round. Iraq was disqualified for fielding over-aged players in a youth tournament, so Costa Rica advanced to the Final Round almost unopposed. Costa Rica came out victorious to win their third title and participate in their first World Cup ever.
