His grand prix debut came at the 1994 Spanish Grand Prix, as replacement for the late Ayrton Senna, and it took him just a year to score his first win.
He made his grand prix debut four years later with Brabham and impressed enough as Williams test driver to land a full-time seat with the team in 1993, after Nigel Mansell decided to retire rather than go up against Alain Prost.
British American Racing driver Jenson Button finished runner-up in 1999, just a few months before he made his grand prix debut for Williams, and admits that he loved the place and the track.
