The census was especially important because it was used as a referece by the various authorities in Bosnia who sought to expel populations from their areas of control. Without the census it would have been difficult for the Serb and Croat authorities to lay claim to particular territiories because they would have been unaware of the number of Croat and Serbs in a particular municipality.
