  • The Andrea Moda team were refused entry to the Grand Prix and were thrown out of the Championship for bringing the sport into disrepute.
  • The Fondmetal team would also pull out of the sport after this race.
  • Riccardo Patrese led into the closing stages until he suffered gearbox trouble, forcing him to concede the lead to Ayrton Senna.
  • Nigel Mansell announced his retirement from Formula 1 on the morning of the race, as rumors had said that Williams had already signed Alain Prost for the next season as well as known to be attempting to sign Ayrton Senna. Angered and hurt by this he decided to announce his retirement despite being told minutes before the press conference that he would be able to partner Prost. Prost and Mansell had had a firey partnership at Ferrari in the 1991 season.

Italian Fabio Comparato finally got the monkey off his back with his first victory on the tour in his 50th start at the Grand Prix of Malaysia dominating on the glassy still surface in Putrajaya.
His crash at the 3rd round of the championship at the Grand Prix of Portugal curbed his momentum to challenge for the top spot in the table.
Running most of the season with an Italian DAC hull which he felt comfortable in, his best day was a 5th at the Grand Prix of Singapore after qualifying 15th.
