The 1995 Nunavut Capital Plebiscite was the third territory wide plebiscite in the Northwest Territories history. The plebiscite was held on December 11, 1995. The plebiscite was not entirely territory wide, but instead was held in the area of the Northwest Territories that was to be split off into Nunavut. The purpose was to select a capital city.


The plebiscite was run under the Northwest Territories Plebiscite Act and overseen by Elections Northwest Territories. The plebiscite was non-binding, and the results were to be taken to by Indian Affairs and Northern Development Minister Ron Irwin to the federal cabinet. Ron Irwin (born October 29, 1936) is a Canadian diplomat and former politician. ...


A breakdown of community results will never be released, all the ballots were sealed and taken to a neutral site for counting, to prevent antimosity between communities.
