Notes

  • Fastest Lap: Jacques Villeneuve 1:33.421
  • Pole position: Jacques Villeneuve 1:32.371
  • The race was restarted after an opening lap accident. Coulthard and Brundle had to restart from the pit lane while Herbert did not take the restart.
  • First Start: Giancarlo Fisichella, Ricardo Rosset, Jacques Villeneuve.
  • First Pole Position: Jacques Villeneuve.
  • Martin Brundle's "spin off" was actually a spectacular barrel roll into a sand trap where the car actually broke in two. Brundle was ok, though.
  • Jacques Villeneuve had been on course for a debut victory, however an oil leak resulted in the William's team ordering him to surrender the lead to Hill.

The Australian Formula One Grand Prix is a Formula One race held as part of the annual Formula One championship season.
Australian Grands Prix, not part of the World Championship but featuring F1 open-wheeler racing vehicles, were held at various circuits around Australia for many years.
In 1996, after the government of Jeff Kennett spent an undisclosed (but speculated to be quite large) amount, the race was shifted to a rebuilt Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne.
