The European Grand Prix is an important venue for engine suppliers BMW, as it is the first of three races this season to be hosted in one of the home countries for the Anglo-German partnership.
Following the introduction of their hugely modified 004 at the last Grand Prix in Canada, BAR are hoping to be more competitive in the second half of the 2002 season after eight races in which they are the only team that has failed to score even a single point.
In 1996, the European Grand Prix was his first ever win in only his fourth race with Williams and he finished on the top step of the podium again a year later here in the Grand Prix of Luxembourg.
