The Australian Formula One Grand Prix is a Formula One race held as part of the annual Formula One championship season.
Australian Grands Prix, not part of the World Championship but featuring F1 open-wheeler racing vehicles, were held at various circuits around Australia for many years.
The race was struck by tragedy in 2001, when a flying tyre from a crash between Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve flew through a gap in the barrier fence and killed a volunteer track marshal.

The Australian Grand Prix will be Kimi Räikkönen's first race as a West McLaren Mercedes driver, with team-mate David Coulthard starting his sixth year with the team.
The Australian Grand Prix also marks the five-year anniversary of the successful West McLaren Mercedes Title Partnership, which began with David securing victory in the maiden race, at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix.
The first official Australian Grand Prix took place in 1985 at the Adelaide circuit, where it was held for eleven years before relocating to Melbourne in 1996.
