THE Belgian government's insistence that tobacco advertising should be banned at the Belgian Grand Prix could lead to the disappearance of the event from the Formula 1 calendar next year.
When the Belgian parliament voted through the law in 1997, Bernie Ecclestone took the Grand Prix off the F1 calendar and it was not reinstated until the local government of Wallonia issued a decree exempting Grand Prix racing from the ban.
If the Belgians do not back down we would expect the 2000 race to be cancelled and the most likely outcome is for the date to be given to Zandvoort for a Dutch Grand Prix.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER's 26th Grand Prix victory will be remembered as one of his finest because - as usual - he combined a brilliant driving talent with an extraordinary ability to make the right decision at the right time when it really mattered.
It was here, of course, that he made his Grand Prix debut in a Jordan in 1991 and where a year later he won his first Grand Prix victory.
The 1997 wet is a bit quicker than the 1996 tire and so as the track dried out in the early laps he was able to get past Alesi and make a break with clear air ahead - Schumacher being so far up the road by that point that Giancarlo could not even see him.
