The 1997 Pacific hurricane season was fairly active, due to the strong El Nino that was occuring at the time. The deadliest storm of the season was Hurricane Pauline, which killed at least 230 people along the southern coast of Mexico, and possibly as many as 400. It was a category 3 storm as it skirted the coast and made landfall. A month later, the same region was hit by category 1 Hurricane Rick, although no casualties were reported. Hurricane Linda became the most powerful East Pacific hurricane ever observed when it reached a maximum windspeed of 185 mph and a minimum pressure of 900 mb on September 12. However, it did not cause any damage. Hurricane Guillermo also reached category 5 intensity. Hurricane Nora made landfall in Baja California as a category 1 storm, killing two people, and Tropical Storm Olaf made two landfalls along the coast of Mexico. Super Typhoon Paka began its life in the Central Pacific basin, moved into the Western Pacific, reached Category 5 intensity, and devastated Guam. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season lasted from June 1 to November 10.
