"1999" is one of Prince's most well-known songs and a defining point in his rise to superstar status. The monumentally apocalyptic, yet upbeat party anthem moved many people and saw great chart success in 1983, peaking at #12 in the US and #25 in the UK (reaching #2 in the UK when re-released in 1985). The album version of the song starts with a slowed-down voice representing God, reassuring the listener "Don't worry, I won't hurt you. I only want you to have some fun." Prince shares lead vocals on the track with members of his band The Revolution, namely Dez Dickerson, Lisa Coleman and Jill Jones. Originally conceived to be a three-part harmony, it was later decided to separate out the voices that started each verse. The verse melody was reused by Prince (writing under the name "Christopher") in the song "Manic Monday", written for The Bangles. The synth chords inspired Phil Collins' song "Sussudio" as well as Marillion's "Incommunicado." Image File history File links No higher resolution available. ... Trivia

  • Gary Numan recorded a cover of "1999" during sessions for his 1991 album Outland, but the track ended up being a B-side on his 1992 single, "Machine + Soul Part Two." The track re-appeared as a bonus track on the 1998 CD re-issue of the Machine + Soul album.
  • In the anime fan parody Evangelion: ReDeath, the song "1999" is played in the year 2000. The paradox it creates rips a hole in time and space and brings about the Second Impact. When played again in 2015, it culminates in the Third Impact.
  • In The Simpsons episode, "Homerpalooza," when Otto's shoes are talking to him, they say, "Don't worry, we won't hurt you. We just want to have some fun." This recalls the introductory lyrics to the song in the extended album version.
  • Another reference to this song on The Simpsons occurs on the episode "22 Short Films About Springfield", when Apu closes the Kwik-E-Mart so he can go to a party, he says, "For the next five minutes, I'm going to party like it's on sale for $19.99."
  • The keyboard melody during the chorus of this song is identical to the harmony during the chorus of "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & The Papas, therefore confirming the link from that song through "1999" and on to "Manic Monday".
  • Singer La Toya Jackson performed "1999" during her "Live at Balley's" concert. This is the second Prince track she has covered, the first being "Private Joy", from his Controversy album.
  • In the Will Smith song "Will2K", at the end of the first verse, K-Ci starts to sing "..and we gonna party like it's 19..", before being interrupted by a sample of a record skipping and Will exclaiming "Hold up, it is" (Will's album Willennium was released on 11/16/1999; incidentally, this song also samples The Clash's Rock the Casbah, off the album Combat Rock, which came out in 1982, the same year as "1999")
  • On the Family Guy episode Untitled Griffin Family History, during the sequence where a caveman version of Peter successfully sells a wheel, he tells his wife Lois, "You and me are gonna party like it's 9."
  • On the Futurama episode, "Hell is Other Robots", Fry says during the Beastie Boys concert, "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999--again."
  • In the episode, It's a Wonder-Phil Life of Phil of The Future, 1 of Vice Principal Hackett's clones says,"Let's party like it's 2199!"

Five Horizons: May 1999 Song X - Better Man (1052 words)
"Better Man" is one of those songs that many fans have developed a love-hate relationship with, mostly due to its semi-consistent presence in the live show.
However, given Ed's fandom, it has generally been assumed that this is the reason for his attraction to the song.
But, it is a truly great song, and so is "Better Man." At the end of the day, it combines all the best elements that make PJ Pearl Jam, and kicks in, rocks out.
Eurovision Song Contest 1999 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (479 words)
The Eurovision Song Contest 1999 was the 44th Eurovision Song Contest and was held on May 29, 1999 in Jerusalem.
From this year, the long-standing rule that each country had to sing in one of its own national languages was dropped, and it was decided that France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, as the highest-paying European Broadcasting Union subscribers, would automatically be allowed to participate every year, irrespective of their five-year point average.
*Because the song used synthesised male backing voices, Croatia's score was reduced by 33% to 79 for the purpose of calculating its five-year average to determine participation in future contests, though it was decided to leave its placement in the 1999 result unaffected.
