His translation of a strong qualifying performance into morale-boosting result on this most challenging of circuits was the change of fortune the team have worked so hard for and the answer to his recent critics, though he would argue they never needed answering.
It was in Malaysia, for Ferrari in 1999, that he had last wasted the stuff in sporting celebration.

According to sources in the team, the appeal will be based on the claim that the side barge boards, which were found to not conform with the FIA technical regulations, were approved previously by the FIA scrutiny, and were used, under approval in the European Grand Prix as well.
While Mika Hakkinen has been declared the winner of the Malaysian Grand Prix - and therefore the World Champion - the result has not been made final just yet, due to Ferrari's appeal which will be heard by the International Court of Appeal of the FIA probably later this week.
Both Ferrari drivers, Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher, were disqualified from the Malaysian Grand Prix after their cars were found to be in breach of the regulations at the end of the race.
