BBC 1Xtra is a UKradio station from the BBC specialising in urban and black music. Launched at 1800 on August 16, 2002, it was originally codenamed Network X. Typical music includes hip hop, garage, gospel music and r&b. It is available on digital radio (DAB), digital satellite television, digital terrestrial television (Freeview), and the Internet. It has its own news team; the hourly news reports are called TX.
And its position as one of the main weapons in the BBC's battle to hold on to younger, ethnic audiences means it is important to the corporation.
In its first 12 months, 1Xtra has slotted in between the sister station Radio 1, with its professionalism, and the illegal pirate stations, with their cutting-edge talent and credibility.
But a BBC spokesman argued that the stations "do a great deal to inform and educate their audience on a variety of issues including violence and racism".
BBC 7 is a digital radio station broadcasting comedy, drama, and children's programming 24 hours a day.
It is the principal broadcasting outlet for the BBC's vast archive of spoken-word entertainment.
BBC 7 can be heard worldwide on the Internet, across northern Europe via the Astra 2D satellite, and inthe UK on DAB digital radio, cable television, and Freeview digital terrestrial television.
