The 2000 American League Division Series, the first round of the 2000 American League playoffs, saw the wild card-qualifying Seattle Mariners (91-71) beat the Central Division champion Chicago White Sox (95-67) 3 games to 0, and the Eastern Division champion and defending World Series champion New York Yankees (87-74) defeat the Western Division champion Oakland Athletics (91-70) 3-2. The Mariners could have tied the Athletics, who missed one game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, for the best record in the Western Division; but as the A's would still have been designated the division champions due to their winning the season series 9-4 against the Mariners, the game was not required to be made up. The Mariners and Yankees went on to meet in the American League Championship Series, for the right to advance to the 2000 World Series against the National League champion. Division Series History by Baseball Almanac (478 words)
Until 1969, when there were no divisions, the team finishing with the best record in each league won that league's pennant and faced the other league's pennant winner in the Fall Classic.
As a result, the winners in each division were now required to play each other in a best-of-five Championship Series to determine who would advance to represent their respective leagues in the coveted World Series.
However, if the wild-card team and the division leader with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the next winningest division leader, and the remaining two division leaders play.
American League Division Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (293 words)
The Division Series was created after the 1993 season when Major League Baseball restructured each league into three divisions, but they were first played in 1995 due to the cancellation of the 1994 playoffs.
Typically, the wild-card team is assigned to play the division winner with the best winning percentage in one series, and the other two division winners play the other series.
However, if the wild-card team and the division winner with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the division winner with the second-best record, and the remaining two division winners play.
