Summary
The 2000 Italian Grand Prix featured one of the most tragic first laps in Formula One history. At the newly redesigned first chicane, Eddie Irvine and both Saubers collided; the incident caused Irvine's car to stall out, and he dropped out. Eddie Irvine, US Grand Prix, 2002 Influenced by his parents who are also involved in racing, Eddie Irvine (born 10 November 1965 in Bangor, Northern Ireland) began his racing career in 1983. ...

Up ahead, madness broke out in the second chicane when both Jordans slammed into each other. They then rammed Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard from behind. All four cars ended up in the gravel trap ahead, but were soon joined by a flying Pedro de la Rosa, who hit Johnny Herbert so hard from behind, he launched violently into the air and slammed into the gravel trap, landing just to the right of Barrichello's Ferrari, in fact, almost on top of it. During his flight into the gravel trap, de la Rosa bounced off of Coulthard's McLaren, but fortunately, not Coulthard himself. Heinz-Harald Frentzen's right front tire made a long arc into the trap, managing not to land on someone else. Thankfully, all five drivers were OK physically, but all of them were affected mentally, especially Jarno Trulli, who could be seen flailing his arms in anger after getting out of his car. Of all six first lap retirees, only Herbert managed to limp back to the pits, and he only had three wheels, as de la Rosa had ripped off the left rear. However, the accident had tragic circumstances. The right rear from Trulli's Jordan had struck fire marshal Paolo Ghislimberti in the chest. Ghislimberti was given a heart massage at trackside, but he later died, becoming the first death in Formula One since Ayrton Senna's tragic fatal accident at the somber 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. There were conflicting reports about Ghislimberti's age, but all seemed to indicate the he was between the ages of 30 and 35 at the time of his death. To the surprise of everyone at the track, the accident did not bring out the red flag, but rather the safety car. This upset many drivers, Coulthard among them, who said the race should've been stopped with the medical situation involving Ghislimberti. For the first 11 laps of the race, the field slowly crawled around the circuit behind the safety car. Michael Schumacher was the leader, with Mika Hakkinen second. Both were well ahead of the accident when it happened. On lap 12, the safety car turned out its lights, giving the signal that would pull into the pits at the end of the lap, and the track would finally be safe enough to take on at full speed. On the backstraight leading up to the famous Parabolica hairpin, Schumacher slowed heavily so that the safety car could pull in, and he could get a fast getaway. Everyone began bottlenecking up behind him, and poor Jenson Button, sixth at the time, was caught out, forced to go to the left into the grass, where he slammed into the guardrail, perilously close to another marshal. As the field turned onto the frontstraight, Button's badly damaged left rear suspension caused him to slide off into the tire barrier at Parabolica just a few meters later, his day finished. Schumacher and Hakkinen, both using one-stop strategies, then tried outpacing each other, but no matter how hard the Finn tried, his McLaren-Mercedes couldn't keep pace with the German's Ferrari. Schumacher went onto win the Italian Grand Prix for the third time in the last six years. It was his 41st career victory, putting him into a tie for second all-time with the late Senna. Hakkinen took second, with Ralf Schumacher placing third. With his 42nd victory at the 2000 United States Grand Prix two weeks later, Michael Schumacher would take sole possession of second all-time. During the post-race press conference, Schumacher broke into tears before the worldwide television audience when asked if tying Senna meant a lot to him (he said it did). This was especially shocking, considering Schumacher's reputation as someone who doesn't show much emotion. He didn't answer another question during the TV unilaterals as he tried to regain his composure. Hakkinen consoled Schumacher by placing his left hand on the back of Schumacher's neck and giving him a couple of pats on the back. A joint press conference by U.S. President George W.
