This is a summary of 2000 in music in the United Kingdom, including the official charts from that year. 2000 saw many British acts dominate the charts. Being the first year in a new millennium it saw how competitive the industry had become over the 1990s with numerous new releases out each week. 2000 holds the record for the most number one singles in one particular year, with 43 singles holding the number one spot, if you include the Westlife number one single spanning over from Christmas in 1999. The year was particularly successful for Westlife, Moby, Travis and The Beatles. Summary
January Britney Spears continues her rise to superstardom with her fourth release and second number one After Europop and Latino crazes had come to and end after the novelty act season in the summer of 1999, 2000 saw the new millennium's artists reign the charts, most of which were UK acts. The biggest boyband in the UK had definitely become Westlife, who held the top spot for 4 weeks with their 4th single from their debut album a double A-side of "I Have A Dream" and "Seasons In The Sun". Staying at the top of the charts for the first 2 weeks in January, it was time for classic Welsh rock band, The Manic Street Preachers to score their 2nd UK number one with their limited edition single release, "The Masses Against The Classes". Due to limited availability (deleted on day of issue), sales were probably too low to allow this song to stay at the top for a further week. Taking over was pop princess Britney Spears with the fourth single release from her debut album, Baby One More Time. "Born To Make You Happy" was only her second chart topper, with the intervening 2 releases between that and "Baby One More Time" hitting the Top 5. The albums chart was dominated by successful pop-rock band, Travis, who returned to the top of the albums chart after 18 weeks, for a 5 week run at number one. The Man Who became their most successful album to date. The album saw them perform better in the singles chart, with 4 consecutive Top 10 singles and their follow up album also made number one.
February Oasis top the charts with Go Let It Out Becoming one of the only singles to remain at number one for more than a week for the year, soul voiced singer, Gabrielle scored her second and last UK chart topper, with her new single, "Rise" from the album of the same name. "Rise"'s introduction is based on the one to Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door". After a two week run at the top, Oasis released their first single since 1998, "Go Let It Out", but due to their massive fanbase, they went in straight at the top. This became Oasis' 5th UK chart topper, since their first number one single in 1995, "Some Might Say". All Saints were back at the top, knocking Oasis right off, with their new song, "Pure Shores" from their new album Saints And Sinners. Their first number one single since 1998, "Pure Shores" was taken from the soundtrack to the film, The Beach starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The song managed to stay at the top for two weeks and became their most successful single ever. The albums chart was dominated by Travis in the early part of this month, but was eventually knocked off by singer, Gabrielle. Her new album Rise became very successful topping the albums chart for 3 weeks and spanned her 2nd number one single of the same name as the album, which had hit the top in January. She had made an impressive resurgence since her popularity with her debut single, "Dreams" and continued successfully, providing her vocals on the soundtrack to romantic comedy Bridget Jones, with a song called "Out Of Reach"'.
March Bryan Adams provided the vocals for Chicane's dance track Don't Give Up It was not long before the queen of pop took the number one spot again. Madonna's first number one single since "Frozen" in 1998, it made her the third consecutive artist to hit the top spot who last hit the top spot in 1998. "American Pie" is a cover of the number two hit from 1972 by Don McLean which is taken from Madonna's movie, The Next Best Thing. UK producer Nick Bracegirdle, known as Chicane created a dance track, known as "Don't Give Up" which took over from Madonna at number one. Vocals were provided by Bryan Adams, who scored his first number one since 1991 – Chicane would later mix and release Bryan Adams' "Cloud Number Nine". However, even he could not keep Geri Halliwell from returning to number one with her fourth single from her debut album Schizophonic. "Bag It Up" became her third consecutive single to reach at the top. Knocking off Gabrielle, Oasis received another number one album with their new release, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants. The album had already spanned a number one single, "Go Let It Out" which reached the top spot in February. However, Travis would not allow them to remain at the top, and after a week, The Man Who returned to number one for a 2 week stay.
April Moby tops the album charts with the massively successful Play Interestingly, taking over from ex-spice girl Geri Halliwell, was current Spice Girl Melanie C. With the Spice Girls having taken a break from their career as a group, they all began to pursue solo careers. Following in the footsteps of Melanie B, Mel C scored a number one hit. Featuring Lisa Left Eye Lopes from hip hop trio, TLC, "Never Be The Same Again" became Mel C's first UK number one. It was taken from her album, Northern Star, which is the most successful album a Spice Girl has ever released (based upon global sales). Three months after their previous number one single, the Irish lads were back at the top, when Westlife hit the number one spot with their 5th single taken from their debut album, "Fool Again". This gave them a new chart record, they were the first act to have their first 5 singles enter the charts at Number One. However, their stay was short-lived, when newcomer Craig David hit the top with his debut solo release after fronting Artful Dodger's number two hit from December 1999, "Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta". "Fill Me In" was his first single as a solo artist and gained him fame for the next 3 years, having released his last single at the end of 2003. Taking over from Craig David was somewhat of a miracle track. Coco's dance track "I Need A Miracle" from 1997 was fused by Fragma with their own track, "Toca Me" to create a new dance track, "Toca's Miracle". It topped the UK charts for 2 weeks, becoming only the third single to spend more than a week at the summit in 2000. Versatile singer, Carlos Santana, known as Santana in the music world, hit the top spot on the albums chart in the UK for the first time, with his new album, Supernatural. The album was a huge success in the US, spanning 2 number one singles, both lasting for 10 weeks or more at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. After 2 weeks, however, guitarist Moby's album, Play returned to the charts and reached the number one spot. It remained there for 5 weeks, amazingly becoming the second album to do so in the year.
May Releases were becoming incredibly unexpected around this time of the year. Two 17-year-old kids, Oxide & Neutrino with their garage dance track, "Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)". It was the theme song from the TV show, Casualty and spent a week at the top. Taking over was pop phenomenon, Britney Spears. With the massive success of her debut album, Baby One More Time, Britney released the first single from her second album, "Oops...I Did It Again!". The single was of the same name as her album and went straight to number one, but only managed to last a week. The single saw her taking a slightly different direction to her first direction with more risky pop rather than the basic pop she sang before. The album was not as successful as her first, nor was her third release, Britney. After this single, she went into a period of decline with sales decreasing, but made an impressive resurgence 4 years later. Australian band, Madison Avenue knocked Britney off the top spot when their number 30 hit from 1999, "Don't Call Me Baby" was re-issued and stormed to the top of the charts. They were the first act of Australian nationality to score a UK chart topper since 1983. Continuing the run of one week number ones, Billie Piper, previously known as Billie, scored her 3rd and final UK chart topper, with her new single release "Day & Night". Reload, new release from Tom Jones returned to the top of the albums chart, after topping the charts in October of 1999. However, his stay at the top was cut short to a week, when powerful voiced US singer, Whitney Houston came in at number one with her Greatest Hits collection. The album featured many of her hit singles including the likes of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "One Moment In Time", "Saving All My Love For You" and the unforgettable million seller "I Will Always Love You".
June Few songs reached the top spot this month because of a three week run at the top from British singer and DJ, Sonique. Her number 24 hit from 1998, "It Feels So Good" was re-issued after major sales in the US and hit the top spot, remaining there for an amazing three weeks, despite the circumstances of the year. The three week run became the longest in the year, not being managed to be equalled until December. She followed up this number one hit, with a number two hit "Sky" later on in the year. Italian DJ and production duo, Black Legend ended Sonique's stay at the top with their re-working of the 1976 Barry White hit, "You See The Trouble With Me". This became the first number one of 12 consecutive number one's to only last one week at the summit; the highest rate of turnover in UK chart history. A run of 7 one week number albums followed. First were pop-rock icons, Bon Jovi with their new release Crush. The album featured the number three hit, "It's My Life". However, even this massive group could not hold their own on the albums chart, when Reload's sales shot back up taking it to the top spot and giving Tom Jones another week at the top. Pop group S-Club 7 got their first and only number one album, with their second release, 7. Their debut album, S Club and third album, Sunshine hit the top 5, however their fourth album, Seeing Double was a relative failure missing the Top 10 altogether. Their Children in Need single hit number one later on in the year.
July Coldplay's received massive critical acclaim with their debut album, Parachutes. Australian popstar, Kylie Minogue was a huge star in the late 80's. After her 4th number one in 1990, her popularity gradually declined over time. Her last top 10 hit was in 1994 and she hadnt charted since 1998 before this new song which brought her back into the limelight. "Spinning Around" was taken from her latest album, Light Years, and became her first UK chart topper for 10 years. The bouncy pop song was co-written by Paula Abdul and helped catapult Kylie into super stardom. She was to experience even further success with her next album the following year. Controversial rapper, Eminem took over from Kylie after a week with his first Number one single, "The Real Slim Shady". This was a follow up to his two Top 5 hits from 1999, both of which were taken from his debut album,The Slim Shady LP. This song was released from his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Taking over after 7 days were Irish family pop-folk rock band, The Corrs scored their first ever chart topper, despite having singles hits since 1996. They had experienced massive success in the albums chart, especially with their last album, Talk On Corners, which has sold over 2.7 million copies. Taking over from the Corrs was Ronan Keating with his second solo release and second UK Chart topper. Taken from his self titled debut album, "Life Is A Rollercoaster" was a more upbeat hit compared to his debut. However, one week was all it lasted, when boyband Five gathered the remaining members of Queen to do a cover of their classic anthemic song, "We Will Rock You", which features on Queen's Platinum Collection. It gave Five their second chart topper and was the first time this single charted on its own account, because originally it was only released as a B-side in 1977. The summer of 2000 was full of new releases and August only extended this. Eminem's second album, The Marshall Mathers LP hit the top spot this month and spanned two number one singles. Its run at the top was interrupted by singer Richard Ashcroft, who was originally a member of the successful rock band The Verve, who had a strong following. However, not even his resurgence could keep Eminem's sales from staying high when The Marshall Mathers LP returned to number one for a week. However, pop-rock band, Coldplay stormed to the top of the charts with their debut album, Parachutes. A hugely successful album worldwide, Coldplay became one of the first and only UK artists to gain huge fame in the US in the new millennium. Even the perennial success of the album did not allow them more than a week at the top, when pop-folk rock family band, The Corrs hit the top with their new release, In Blue featuring their only chart topping single, "Breathless". The album remained at the top for 2 weeks and became successful in it's own right, but nowhere near as successful as their previous release Talk On Corners.
August The one week number ones continued, with Craig David hitting the top once again (for the last time, however) with his second single, "7 Days". The song took a different turn to his debut single, but this second chart topper made him the youngest solo male (19) to score two number one's since Donny Osmond in 1973. Megastar, Robbie Williams scored his 3rd UK number one with a track from his new album, Sing When You're Winning. "Rock DJ" was his second consecutive chart topper and the video featured Robbie stripping naked dancing in the centre of many girls. It caused controversy and was banned by many TV stations. Taking over from Robbie was Melanie C hitting the top spot for a second time with the 4th release from her debut album, Northern Star. "I Turn To You" was her only complete solo number one hit ("Never Be The Same Again" featured Lisa Lopes). She was the most successful Spice Girl at the time, however her success plummeted after the end of the year. Finally, Italian DJ, Spiller beat Truesteppers to the top spot the following week, which had been the subject of media discussion for the entire week. Vocals on Spiller's track, "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" were provided by Sophie Ellis Bextor who continued onto great solo success. Knocking the Corrs off, Ronan hit the top spot with his debut solo self titled album. Ronan was a great success and Keating had established himself as a true star. Following his two chart topping singles, Craig David released his debut solo album, Born To Do It. It shot straight to number one and remained there for 2 weeks.
September Madonna's Music album tops the charts after the single of the same name gave her a 10th number one Hitting the top for the second time in 2000, Madonna returned to the charts with her new single "Music" from her Music album. The video features comedian, Ali G as the chauffeur. This was her 10th UK number one, putting her fourth in the most UK number one's category behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles (17 each) and Cliff Richard (14). This was to change over the next 3 years, and Madonna was eventually knocked down to 5th place. Brand new boyband A1 finally scored a UK chart topper with their 5th single release, "Take On Me". The song was a cover of Norwegian band A-ha's number two hit from 1985. Interestingly enough, A1 contained one Norwegian number. Finally stopping the run of one week number ones at 12, an unlikely collaboration hit the top spot. US star Mariah Carey teamed up with Irish boyband Westlife to cover a Phil Collins number two hit from 1984, "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)". The song stayed at the top for 2 weeks and gave Mariah her 2nd and last UK number one. Her success in the UK had been significantly less than her success in the US, where she became a phenomenon, scoring 15 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Westlife scored a 6th chart topper, making them the first act in UK chart history to have their first six singles enter at number one. Knocking off Craig David, was now superstar, Robbie Williams with his third consecutive chart topping album, Sing When You're Winning, featuring the chart topping single "Rock DJ" and also his duet with Kylie Minogue, "Kids", which made number two the following month being kept off the top spot by U2's "Beautiful Day". The leading lady in pop then took over from Robbie, with her new album, Music. Madonna's new album had already spanned a chart topper of the same name as the album, and the album topped the charts for 2 weeks.
October After a 2 week stay by Westlife & Mariah Carey, All Saints hit the top for a fifth and final time, with another release from their successful second album, Saints & Sinners. "Black Coffee" was their second consecutive chart topper, but they shortly disbanded after releasing a third single from the album. 3 years since their last chart topper, U2 returned to the top of the singles charts with their new song, "Beautiful Day" from their brand new chart topping album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. This song is probably their best remembered. Song and dance quintet, Steps scored a second number one before declining in popularity. Disco track "Stomp" was from their new album, Buzz. Once again, number ones were staying only for a week, however turnover rate did not become as high as the record for 12 one week number ones. Rock band Radiohead scored their second album chart topper with their new release, Kid A. They scored another 2 chart topping albums, giving them 4 consecutive in total by 2003. Taking over from them after 2 weeks were girl group, All Saints, who released their second album, Saints & Sinners, which had already spanned 2 chart topping singles; "Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee". This was their first chart topping album; their debut only made number two in 1998. Despite the singles success from the album, the album itself only lasted a week at the summit.
November Westlife broke records on their way to becoming the biggest boy band of all time Almost 2 years after their previous release, the Spice Girls finally hit the top spot, for a ninth time, with their new double A-side, "Holler/Let Love Lead The Way", from their third album, Forever. "Holler" saw the girls attempt at a more urban style, while "Let Love Lead The Way" was a more typical love ballad, in the vein of "2 Become 1". This gave them the same number of chart toppers as the world's most successful pop group, Abba. They released no more songs after this, all pursuing solo careers. They set an impressive record, out of 10 singles released, 9 of them went to number one. The most successful debut record was set by the next number one. Another love ballad, "My Love", saw Westlife back at the top. This made them the first act in UK chart history to have their first seven singles enter at number one. No act has even been able to equal this record, let alone break it. Boybands were back in fashion, when A1 took over from Westlife with their second consecutive (and last) UK chart topper. This was their own song, "Same Old Brand New You". They enjoyed mild success until mid 2002 when they split. US country music artist LeAnn Rimes received her first UK chart topper, with the song from the new movie, Coyote Ugly, "Can't Fight The Moonlight". She was best known for her 1998 hit, "How Do I Live", which stayed in the Top 40 for 33 weeks, but peaked at number 7. It remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for 69 weeks, but never made number one. Rock band, Texas returned with a second number one album, after their chart topper from 1999, this time with a collection of their Greatest Hits. Next to top the charts were Irish rock band, U2, with their new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, featuring the chart topping single, "Beautiful Day". The album was praised and was said to be their first brilliant album since The Joshua Tree. Boyband, Westlife, scored their first chart topping album with their second album, Coast To Coast. Their debut only made number two. Coast To Coast contained the chart topping singles, "I Have A Dream", "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" and "My Love". Their 8th single, "What Makes A Man" was also released from this album, but only made number two being kept off the top spot by Bob The Builder in Christmas week.
December The Beatles once again top the chart with their greatest hits album, 1 The first Christmas number one in the new millennium. There was large competition and in this year of mass new releases, it was stronger than ever. Having charted since 1998, R'N'B/Hip Hop/Pop trio Destiny's Child hit the top spot for the first time with their new release "Independent Woman Part 1", taken from the hit movie Charlie's Angels. Children In Need song took over from Destiny's Child, when mixed-gender pop group S Club 7 got their second chart topper with a Christmas love ballad, "Never Had A Dream Come True". Competition for the Christmas number one spot was increasing, and Eminem scored his second Number one single, with his new release "Stan". "Stan" is the story of an obsessive fan who ends up committing suicide and killing his wife and unborn baby. Eminem began discussing much more serious issues in his music as his career continued. The female singer on this track is Dido, whos album, "No Angel" was re-issued, topped the chart and she went on to become a star. Then Christmas week came around, and no other than novelty act Bob The Builder took the number one spot, with his first single, "Can We Fix It". The song stayed at number one for 3 weeks, broke Westlife's run of consecutive number ones and was the first single to sell a million copies since "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" in 1999. The first Christmas number one album of the new millennium, and although not usually being of any significance, especially in comparison to the single, it was a special album. It was taken by the Beatles' new Greatest Hits compilation 1 which featured all of their number one singles from the UK and US. Critics argued that no Beatles' Greatest Hits compilation is complete without "Strawberry Fields Forever", however it only managed to make number two in the UK and number eight in the US and could not be included on this compilation. It topped the album chart for 9 consecutive weeks, becoming the longest consecutive stay at the top since The Eurythmics stayed at the top for 9 weeks in 1991 with their Greatest Hits compilation. Despite missing out some Beatles classics, 1 was a huge success and became their 15th UK number one album.
