Gold served on most of the major bodies in British and European athletics, for many years in an unpaid capacity, and for much of that time resisted the professionalisation of the sport.
Even in the mid-1990s, when athletics had become a multimillion-pound industry, Gold opposed plans to allow trackside betting and deplored a decision by the European Athletics Association (of which he was honorary life president) to rename the European Cup after its principal sponsor, the Spar supermarket chain.
At the European Indoor Championships in 1977, he was bundled out of the stadium by armed Basque separatists, before being released unharmed - characteristically, his main concern was that the games should go ahead.
