The teams in each group would play against each other in a home-and-away basis. The team with most points in each group would qualify to the World Cup. For the runners-up, they were drawn into home-and-away knock-out matches, without any seedings (the draw was made before the group matches were completed). Eight of them would play against each other, while the ninth (drawn randomly) would play against the third best team from Asia, with winners of the matches qualifying.
