Listed below are the dates and results for the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the North, Central American and Caribbean zone (CONCACAF). 197 teams took part in the 2002 World Cup qualification rounds, divided in 6 Continental Zones, every team trying to snatch a place in the first Football World Cup realized in Asia. ...
A total of 35 CONCACAF teams entered the competition. The North, Central American and Caribbean zone was allocated 3 places (out of 32) in the final tournament. There would be three rounds of play. Mexico, USA, Jamaica and Costa Rica, the 4 best ranked teams according to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Semifinal Round directly, while Canada advanced to the Play-offs directly. The remaining 30 teams were divided into 2 zones, based on geographical considerations, as follows: - Caribbean Zone: The 24 teams were divided into 3 groups of 8 teams each. The teams would play in a knockout tournament, with matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would advance to the Semifinal Round. The runners-up would advance to the Play-offs.
- Central American Zone: The 6 teams were divided into 2 groups of 3 teams each. The teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners would advance to the Semifinal Round. The runners-up would advance to the Play-offs.
In the Play-offs, the 6 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis (a team from North or Central America would play against a team from the Caribbean). The winners would advance to the Semifinal Round. In the Semifinal Round, the 12 teams were divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each. They would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners and runners-up would advance to the Final Round. In the Final Round, the 6 teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The top 3 teams would qualify.
