| The highly anticipated match-up between the high-powered Sacramento Kings, led by Chris Webber and Mike Bibby, and the dominating Los Angeles Lakers, led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant turned into an extraordinary series that is talked about to this day. The Kings, believing in themselves and having some of the loudest fans in the NBA, came in confident about their chances. The Lakers had won game 1 with the dominating play of O'Neal. The Kings pulled out a win in game 2 and went to Los Angeles and won game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. In game 4 the Kings appeared to have a great chance to go up 3-1. The Lakers had one last chance to win the game, down 99-97, Bryant drove the ball to the hoop and threw up a layup, which missed. O'Neal got the rebound for an attempted bank shot but lost control of it. The ball was knocked around with just seconds of game time left, and then was batted out to a wide open Robert Horry who drilled a 3 pointer as time ran out and gave the Lakers an improbable game 4 win and tied the series 2-2. In game 5 Sacramento was down 91-90 at the end of the 4th quarter, but a jump shot by Mike Bibby with about 8 seconds left gave the team the lead and was the eventual game winner and gave Sacramento the confidence that they could beat the Lakers in the 4th quarter. Some feel that Game 6 was controversial because the Lakers shot 27 fourth quarter free throws versus 9 for the Kings . O'Neal managed 41 points and 17 rebounds in the Lakers' narrow victory. This set the stage for a game 7 in Sacramento, with the winner advancing to the NBA Finals. The game had been close throughout, but two free-throws made by Bibby forced the game into overtime. The Kings could not hold on, and eventually lost the series to the Lakers. ARCO Arena is an indoor arena located in Sacramento, California, United States. ...

| This series marked the return of the Celtics to the playoffs for the first time in seven years, and they faced the reigning Eastern Conference champion in the first round. The 76ers had had an off year, but they still had the veteran pieces in place from the year before, so many expected the 76ers to win this series. The first 2 games were played in Boston, where the Celtics won both games resoundingly. The 76ers fought back however, and with Allen Iverson scoring 42 the 76ers won and stayed alive. In game 4 Iverson was slowed down, scoring 26 on just 9 of 26 shooting, and Antoine Walker stepped up for the Celtics, scoring 25. But Iverson's play at the end making a layup, scoring off an Eric Snow steal, and hitting some free throws after Walker drilled a 3 sealed the victory for the 76ers. This set the stage for a game 5 in Boston to decide the series. The Celtics had control on this game throughout, but the 76ers kept within striking distance into the 4th quarter. But Boston went on an amazing streak of 3's, hitting an NBA playoff record 9 of them in the 4th quarter and 19 in the game. Pierce led the way with 46, on 8-10 shooting from downtown, and Boston won in a huge blowout, sending them to the conference semifinals to face 2 seed Detroit. Conference Finals The Eastern Conference Finals match up between the New Jersey Nets and the Boston Celtics was the beginning of a new rivalry. The Nets won game 1, but Boston came back to steal a game in New Jersey to send the series back to Boston tied 1-1. In game 3 the Celtics were down by 21 coming into the 4th quarter, but a resounding speech by Antoine Walker to his teammates inspired the Celtics to the biggest comeback in NBA Playoff history as the Celtics outscored the Nets 40-16 in the 4th quarter. This did not lead to series success though as the Nets won the next three games to advance to the team's first NBA finals. | This was the third consecutive NBA finals appearance for the Lakers', and the first in team history for the Nets. In game 1 the Nets came in with high expectations, but no one else had any for them. The Nets stayed within striking distance, but O'Neal's 36 points and 16 rebounds led the Laker's to victory. In game 2 the Nets were blown out of the building, and O'Neal did even better, putting up 40 points and 12 rebounds and came within 2 assists of a triple double. This brought the series back to New Jersey, the Lakers up 2-0. Game 3 was a close matchup with Kidd, Martin, O'Neal, and Bryant all scoring 26 or more points. Bryant and O'Neal's combined 71 was too much for the Nets to handle though, and the Laker's took a dominating 3-0 series lead. This led to a game 4 in which O'Neal put up 34 points and the Lakers won the game and the championship, accomplishing the NBA's first three peat since Michael Jordan and the Bull's did so in 1998.
